Senior Manager – Procurement – Protein Ingredients


This is a Full-time position in Camden, NJ posted April 1, 2020.

Under the guidance of the Director of Global Procurement, Proteins / Flavors / Spices / Dairy / Soy Protein / Chemicals, this position is responsible for the procurement of Beef, Pork, and Poultry, for all Campbell locations in North America with an annual spend valued at over $205MM.  The individual will ensure quality of materials, competitive pricing, adherence to company policies, procurement processes and endeavors related to the operation of a proactive and strategic Global Procurement Business Unit.

Essential responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Accountable to Develop & Execute Category Strategies that deliver against the departmental goals for cost reduction or value enhancement that result in tangible benefits to the bottom line.
  • Evaluate strategies based on changing market conditions and provide inputs during strategic sourcing activities, including internal and external analysis and negotiations.
  • Execution and coordination with key suppliers to gain maximum value of a whole bird program for further processing use within selective Campbell suppliers. This individual will be responsible for the program’s total P&L and will be expected to develop key industry contacts to optimize the value of any outside sales of excessive raw materials. 
  • Lead coaching and individual training/development as required to build capabilities and upskill talent.
  • Ownership for annual/monthly financial projections for all materials in the Protein Category.
  • Act as the Procurement representative in dealing with Sr. Management and internal & external partners.
  • Collaborate with Business Unit’s leadership and functional partners on strategy development for innovation, productivity, quality, service and continuous improvement of all protein materials.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key protein suppliers driving value thru SRM programs.
  • Coordinate with Risk Management, Finance and General Accounting to identify proper hedging and reporting protocols to maximize the value of the whole bird feedstock and outside sales programs.

Operational Accountability: 

  • Drive development and tracking of enabler cost savings/value add initiatives with functional partners and suppliers.
  • Lead the monthly financial reviews on the whole bird program and monthly reconciliations with key further processes converting the whole bird materials for Campbell.
  • Ensure quality of service, competitive pricing, adherence to company policies, procurement processes related to the operation of a proactive and strategic team.
  • Ensure a deep understanding of supply markets and drivers for key areas – e.g. protein markets, currency, grains, exports, weather and global economic factors.
  • Drive the development of innovation with our supply partners.
  • Thorough understanding of the poultry industry and markets that impact cost, supply and demand.
  • Ability to influence direction of the business and align/engage resources that are outside their area of responsibility.
  • Must demonstrate strategic thought leadership in moving Procurement Protein strategies forward.
  • Partner with cross functional team members such as R&D, Treasury, Finance, Supply Chain and Marketing.
  • Utilize supply chain, technical, commercial and category/commodity knowledge to support business objectives.
  • Incumbent must be able to identify problems, generate options and recommendations for business partners.
  • Must be able to deal with ambiguity and be comfortable in a work environment with change.
  • Partner with R&D, Supply Chain and marketing to develop, evaluate, influence and implement programs/projects.
  • Committed to Campbell Leadership Model and promoting Campbell’s Diversity and Sustainability strategies.
  • Up to 20% Domestic Travel as needed to Plants, Suppliers, and Industry Conferences.

Team Management:

  • Effective Management, Coaching, and Development of 2 Sr. Buyers also responsible for the Proteins categories.
  • Oversee the Performance/Talent Management Process for Direct reports inclusive of regular transparent feedback.

Job complexity:

  • Responsible for over $205MM of Beef, Pork, and Poultry supporting 5 operating units, 3 plants and Co-Man locations.
  • Utilize category/commodity knowledge to support business objectives.
  • Develop into Corporate SME for all elements of the Whole Bird Program which is a complex poultry strategy.
  • Lead cross functional groups to develop Productivity programs that deliver against annual Enabler Targets.
  • Develop and lead Supplier Relationship Management programs that focus on Quality, Productivity and Innovation.
  • Become the subject Matter Expert of North America category specific information on spend, supplier performance, user adoption and compliance, standards and specifications and industry benchmarks.
  • Ensure all NA SAP contracts are issued timely and accurately. 
  • Promote value engineering analyses to support ongoing performance improvement and cost reduction.

We’re looking for the following abilities and skills:

  • Minimum education required: BS/BA degree with MBA desired.
  • Years of relevant experience required: 3-5+ yrs procurement in proteins (meats / pork / poultry), 5+ yrs materials procurement.
  • Strong People Leadership, Ability to Influence externally, Proactive Solution Oriented Procurement Professional.
  • Ability to develop overall material category strategies that are cross functional in nature for both short and long term.
  • Ability to lead negotiations for major and complex buckets of spend.
  • Manages large, complex, or multiple projects effectively.
  • Good inter-personal skills to navigate and bridge multi-functions as well as levels of organization.
  • Stretches team perspective — faster, broader, deeper insights into issues and potential ramifications.
  • Business and analytical leadership skills.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Listens to learn — hears what is not said and able to adapt communications ‘on the fly’ to what is being said.
  • Integrates procurement strategy with other functional strategies to ensure purchasing input is considered in the development of business unit and supply chain strategies.
  • Influences long-term supplier technology, innovation and resource direction towards Campbell’s needs.
  • Recognized by the business for providing robust supply base with risk mitigation and opportunity management.
  • Up to 20% Domestic Travel as needed to Plants, Suppliers, and Industry Conferences.
